Montreal Diocesan Theological College—widely known simply as Dio—seeks to appoint a new Director of United Church Studies, to begin in the summer of 2025.
Following the integration of the United Theological College in 2021 and 2022, Dio is an ecumenical institution that is recognized by the United Church of Canada to grant testamur to candidates for ordination. The college works closely with our ecumenical partners in the Montreal School of Theology and McGill University to prepare people for faithful and creative ministry in the church and the world.
The mandate of the Director of United Church Studies is to lead United Church educational programming and contribute to the maintenance and deepening of a United Church ethos within an ecumenical institution.
Key responsibilities for the Director of United Church Studies include:
- Teach courses to students in line with the post-holder’s areas of expertise, with a particular focus on subjects related to the ministry and mission of the church.
- Work with the Director of Field Education in the planning and delivery of field placements for United Church students.
- Support students in the vocational discernment process in the United Church of Canada.
- In conjunction with the principal, serve as a liaison with the United Church of Canada’s General Council Office and Office of Vocation to ensure the college maintains its status as a testamur-granting institution.
- Engage with the application and admission process for prospective students from a United Church background, including reviewing student files and interviewing applicants.
- Offer academic advising and oversight of student progress for United Church students in all programs leading to testamur, including the Master of Divinity and Diploma in Ministry.
- Support students in planning, leading, and evaluating United Church worship.
- Be an active member of the college’s worshipping life and take a regular turn on all college worship rota.
- Contribute to the life of engaged reflection on the church and its ministry that is characteristic of the college.
The college is looking for a person who:
- Has an earned doctorate (Ph.D., Th.D., D.Min. or equivalent) in a field of study related to our work, OR a master’s degree in theology and additional ministerial/work experience.
- Has teaching experience, particularly in the field of theological education, of adult and mature students, and in a variety of formats (in-person, online, intensive, etc.)
- Has experience fostering belonging and inclusion in inter-cultural contexts.
- Is committed to a flourishing ecumenical environment for theological education
- Can be a pastoral, supportive, challenging, and energizing presence in our community.
- Has sufficient command of both official languages to be able to work with and support candidates for ministry in either English or French.
- Has a committed and engaged connection to the United Church of Canada.
In addition, it is desirable that the person:
- Be able to teach courses related to the history, theology, worship, or polity of the United Church of Canada.
- Be ministry personnel in the United Church of Canada.
This position is 0.8 full-time equivalent (or four days per week). The period of appointment is to be negotiated with the candidate. We anticipate the successful candidate starting in summer 2025.
