A Table of Abundance and Belonging
“When I think about a place at the table, I envision a gathering filled with inclusivity, diversity, and abundance. Abundance, in particular, stands out to me. There’s something deeply meaningful about creating a space where everyone feels welcome.”
Growing up in India, surrounded by a mix of faiths, Shakshi Paul learned to navigate a complex landscape of religion, culture, and identity. Her experiences are shaped by diverse communities, each contributing something unique to her understanding of spirituality. When she moved to Canada and became involved with The United Church of Canada, she found a place that welcomed all her complexities.
As a ministry leader at Kamloops United Church, Shakshi embraces the church’s spirit of inclusion. The diversity of experiences and backgrounds in the church reflects her own journey, one that spans countries and cultures. In the United Church, she doesn’t have to abandon her identity but is encouraged to bring it with her.
Shakshi finds that the practices she grew up with—meditation, silence, mindful walking—are embraced and respected in the United Church. They become essential tools for navigating life’s stresses and uncertainties. And, importantly, they allow her to cultivate a relationship with Christ that feels authentic and grounded.
As part of "A Place at the Table," Shakshi feels a deep connection to the spirit of Christ as a community-builder, a servant, and an advocate. “When I think about a place at the table, I envision a gathering filled with inclusivity, diversity, and abundance. The image that comes to mind is a Thanksgiving table—where people come together to share a meal, celebrate, and be in community. Abundance, in particular, stands out to me. There’s something deeply meaningful about creating a space where everyone feels welcome.”
The church’s depiction of this iconic meal is not just a remembrance, but a call to action—a reminder that the table is open to all, inviting them to bring their unique selves to the fold. In this space, everyone has a place, and Shakshi sees that as the truest reflection of Christ’s love and ministry.

Shakshi Paul became part of the United Church family three years ago, joining Kamloops United Church (BC) as an Activity Coordinator. Having lived in India, the USA, and now Canada, she brings a rich and diverse perspective shaped by her global experiences. Growing up in a military family meant constant travel, making adaptability her greatest strength. This journey exposed her to a variety of cultures, languages, and viewpoints, fostering her ability to connect with people from all walks of life. Inspired by her parents’ dedication to service, Shakshi deeply values the power of community and the bonds of family.
