Phishing Scam Targeting Communities of Faith

A phishing scam is currently targeting United Churches. We would like to remind treasurers to be vigilant about phishing scams. These malicious attempts often come in the form of e-mails, text messages, or phone calls that appear to be legitimate. They may ask for a change of banking information, or personal employee information.

A few tips to protect personal information in your role as a treasurer:

  • Verify the source: If there is a request for a change of banking information, call the employee to verify and take their information over the phone. Do not act on e-mail requests.
  • Do not click on links or open attachments from unknown sources: Attachments may have viruses or the links may direct you to a malicious page. If you are unsure, contact the person/organization directly using a known, trusted method.
  • Be skeptical of urgency: Phishing eemails often create a sense of urgency to pressure you into acting quickly without thinking. Take your time, evaluate, and always double-check the sender’s e-mail address.
  • Use Two-Factor Authentication when possible: This extra step helps protect your account even if your password is compromised.
