Description

The Office of The Moderator and General Secretary is seeking individuals to fill the role of Climate Motivator.  This is an 8-week program at 35 hours per week with an anticipated start date of June 30 or July 1, 2025.

Climate Motivators will be liaising with a local community of faith (could be a church, camp, regional office, etc.) whose work will include team meetings, leadership development, action planning for local context, advocacy to align with United Church policies with climate commitments, and advocating for climate justice with an MP in local ridings.  The Climate Motivator will, at times, work remotely and will need capacity for online communication and learning.

In order to complete an application, each applicant must be sponsored by a local community of faith who appoints a local mentor. This community of faith and mentor will help the Climate Motivator to identify local climate priorities, projects, connections, activists, and government officials.

There five main goals for the Climate Motivator Program:                                           

  1. Engage in climate education and advocacy
  2. Leadership development and engagement with the Moderator
  3. Vocational discernment
  4. Engage with Indigenous, ecumenical and global climate activists
  5. Participate in spiritual/faith practices that celebrate/are informed by Indigenous wisdom, and that explore intersections between ecological justice, social justice, and deepen eco-spirituality.

The Climate Motivator’s Program will include training, leadership development, education, living in community, and group action planning. One week of the summer program will be in residence together at a location to be determined.

Climate Motivators will have a week together at Five Oaks in Paris, ON from July 2-9. During this time they will build community, experience land-based learning with Indigenous leaders, and have time to plan their local projects. They will also have joint gatherings with an ecumenical community of global partners from Kenya, the Philippines, and the United States to learn from each other about the impacts of climate change in other parts of the world.

Climate Motivators will be connecting with other young people across the church who are engaging in leadership and decision-making related to climate justice and advocacy and will work together to plan service and learning activities, as well as opportunities for worship and spiritual practice. They will learn skills in community assessment and engagement such as team building, community meetings, and launching neighbourhood-based projects with other community groups.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Youth between the ages of 15 to 19 are eligible to apply for this position
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
  • Have a sponsoring community of faith and mentor
  • Have a government-issued ID acceptable for travel documentation
  • Be passionate about climate activism and care of Creation
  • Basic technology skills to connect remotely as needed
  • Knowledge and basic understanding of the United Church is an asset

Compensation

Salary will be at $22.55 per hour plus 4% vacation pay.
