Emancipation Sunday is celebrated on the first Sunday in August (even though Emancipation Day in Canada is August 1). This Sunday commemorates the day in 1834 when the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 came into effect for most British colonies, freeing enslaved children under the age of six.
